Today, Feb. 15, the AP reports data published in Science and released at
the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of
Science, showing that every part of every ocean has been affected by human
activity in some way. Researchers studied 17 activities from fishing to
pollution and found that the most affected areas are the North Sea, South
and East China Seas, the Caribbean, the east coast of North America, the
Mediterrranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, the Bering Sea and parts
of the western Pacific. According to the lead author, Ben Halpern at the
National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesies at UC - Santa
Barbara, "the big picture looks much worse than I imagine most people
expected."
